Recommended Motorhome Sites in Wales

Elan Valley: this is a loop around the picturesque Elan Valley, with excellent views on to three reservoirs: Claerwen, Penygarreg and Caban Coch. There are motorhome sites at the reservoir head, such as Midway Holiday Park, and at Rhayader, including Wyeside Caravan & Camping Site.

The Pass of Llanberis: this drive probably has the most stunning view of Snowdonia. There are many twisting roads, so take care when driving. Motorhome sites can be found in Llandrindod Wells and Llysdinam.

Black Mountain Pass: this drive has become extremely popular after being featured on the BBC TV show Top Gear. The drive along route A4069, which travels the western part of Brecon Beacons National Park, is not for the faint-hearted, with its many sharp corners. Visitors can stay inside the park, at Black Mountain Caravan & Camping Park, or outside the park in Llandeilo.

Driving in Wales

Road network: Wales has an excellent network of motorways and smaller A-roads. All routes are well-maintained and well-signposted. Mountain roads can be dangerous at night or in rainy conditions, so care needs to be taken when driving.

Speed limits:

Urban roads: 50kph unless specified
Provincial roads: 60 to 80kph
National roads and motorways: 110kph

Alcohol limits: 0.8 per cent; main roads are regularly policed, with breathalyser tests common and fines for those caught over the limit.

Safety:
Driving is on the left-hand side, with good signage and roads in good condition. Road side assistance is readily available through AA and RAC. Using a hands-free kit with your mobile is allowed. Seatbelts are mandatory for every passenger.
